The cut gets the attention, but the fabric decides how a pair feels at 4 p.m.

Modal (and MicroModal, lyocell)

Made from wood pulp, these fibers are soft and smooth.

  • Obviously uses a MicroModal/Lycra blend in its PrimeMan and EliteMan lines, from European beech.
  • HOM says modal resists shrinking and friction (Classic line: 65% cotton, 22% modal, 13% elastane).
  • Lyocell (Tencel) is related. HOM says its Tencel fabric is four times more absorbent than cotton. Best for: all-day softness.

Microfiber (polyamide/nylon + elastane)

Fine, smooth and stretchy synthetics.

  • Olaf Benz RED0965: 72% polyamide, 28% elastane, which the brand calls ultra-light.
  • HOM H-Fresh: 83% polyamide, 17% elastane, which HOM says is lightweight and quick-drying. Best for: a sleek fit, the gym, travel.

Cotton

Classic, breathable, easy to wash. Pure cotton stretches out over the day, so most modern pairs blend in elastane or modal. Best for: guys who don't like synthetics.

Mesh

An open knit for maximum airflow. Best for: heat and workouts.

Bamboo rayon

Obviously's EveryMan fabric. The brand says it's tougher than its MicroModal and more breathable than cotton.
